Product Design Changes
"Do not be alarmed. Be very, very frightened, Arthur Dent."
This is where Quality Engineering differs from Quality Assurance. One
vice-president of engineering was fond of saying, "We don't want to do
QA because too often it really means Quality After."
If the quality team is involved in the design phase of the product, then
quality can be engineered into the product. This means
- changing features to be more testable
- removing features to do fewer things better
- helping assure that the design meets the requirements
- assuring that quality goals are part of the requirements
The sooner these functions can be done, the better. The quality process
almost always forces design changes, the real question is do you pay
a little up front, or a lot later?
